Essay
The image, from No. 13 (published November 1945), is a lithograph described in the issue's forward as "La Chute d'Icare" created by Matisse in the Summer of 1943. It clearly presages plate 55 in Matisse's book Jazz, published in 1947, also by Teriade.
Jill and I were introduced to a couple copies of Verve by Paris book dealer Leonce Laget during a visit to his shop. It illustrates the serendipity of a personal visit with a dealer, in this case well known for his architecture books, a serendipity often lost in today's less personal book buying world. We acquired the rest of the run over time, sometimes from Laget or his successor Veronica Delvaux, but most often from other sources.
On another visit to Paris we saw an exhibit devoted to Jazz at Centre Pompidou (Beaubourg), The Beaubourg librarian and exhibit curator gave us a letter of introduction to Teriade, whom he insisted we visit. Two days later when we called on M. Teriade, his secretary informed us that he had just left for London and would return in a couple days, alas after our departure for home. Teriade died later that year and before our next visit.
