Unique artist’s book, consisting of a painted embellished wooden box in the shape of a reliquary (22½” x 10½” x 5½”), with hinged door, containing a book (10” x 4½” x 1½”) of painted and hinged wooden boards with 4 half-round inner leaves painted with astronomical and astrological imagery.
Essay
Laura Davidson is a book and paper artist with a studio in Boston, Massachusetts. She produces both one-of-a-kind and limited edition books and prints, often in the form of what she calls “sculptural books.” Her works are held in the artists book collections of the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian, the National Gallery of Art, Harvard University, the Boston Athenaeum, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and other major research institutions. One of her works was recently featured in LC’s magazine and blog. I saw Stargazing in a slide presentation that Davidson made at the “Books Illustrated” symposium honoring Ruth Mortimer, at Smith College in 1996; I instantly fell in love with it up there on the screen, and was delighted to learn that it was available to purchase. It has sat ever since in a prominent spot in my home.
