Essay
The 1874 Winfield Township Map from the 1874 Atlas of DuPage County, Illinois is a fine specimen of Midwest map production and printing of the late nineteenth century. In Section 27 of this map directly west of the “E.P .Mack” homestead property is the farmstead of “M[ichael] & C[hristian] Daleiden”. Christian Daleiden is my great, great, great grandfather on my family’s maternal side. I purchased this copy of the atlas online for my collection of Chicago and midwestern history and to study and to use for my family genealogical research. When I unwrapped the atlas, I was pleased and surprised to find a book plate affixed to the inside cover with the name: “Leone Schmidt” typed on it. Schmidt was a colleague of mine when I was the editor of the Warrenville [Illinois] Historical Society Newsletter in the late nineties. Leone was a prolific author of DuPage and Warrenville Illinois History. Schmidt is my inspiration for my writing on collecting interest on local history
